One of the kiting spots that has been on my radar for some time to explore and visit was Aitutaki, Cook Islands. Located in the South Pacific Ocean, Aitutaki has become a sought after kiteboarding paradise for novices and experts alike. With ankle to waste deep waters that highlight their crystal clear turquoise lagoon, it is easy to see why I travelled over 4,500 miles to experience this remote destination. This August, I was able to cross Aitutaki off my bucket list. I got lucky with stronger winds than normal for kiting and used the smallest kite I brought, the Nobile 9m 50/Fifty, on all the days I kited when there was wind. Typically, the Cook Islands receive trade winds from around June to September, ranging from 15-30 knots. During my first week, it was a bit cooler weather than expected, so I recommend bringing a full wetsuit (3/2mm) aside from your rash guard or spring suit. In addition, bring booties as there is broken coral to minimize cutting up the bottoms of your feet. To get to one of the best flat water spots on the sandbars of Honeymoon Island or One Foot Island in Aitutaki lagoon, you have to take a boat transfer. If you travel all the way to kite here, this is a must! So, are you ready to pack your bags and book your kiting holiday in Aitutaki? In the meantime, check out my Aitutaki video and photos kiting in Honeymoon Island and you will get a glimpse of why everyone is dubbing this place as a kiter's paradise or slice of heaven. See you out on the waters and happy kiting!
